WHERE TO BUY

When it comes to finding the perfect DAB radio, there are a few brands that always seem to stand out. Market leaders like Roberts Radio, Ruark, and the ever-popular Pure appeal to those of us who want the perfect blend of audio quality and aesthetic appeal in our investments.

That’s why, here at Radio Fidelity, we relish any opportunity to put a Pure radio device to the test for our readers. The Pure Evoke H3 is no exception.

Designed with a focus on beauty and performance, the Pure Evoke H3 is a sensational piece of compact audio equipment that would fit perfectly in your kitchen or on a bookshelf. The Evoke H3 is a step-up version of the H2 – one of the simpler offerings in the Evoke portfolio.

Unlike the H2, the H3 takes things up a notch with a dazzling colour display and Bluetooth streaming, so you can listen to all the music you love with ease.

Pure Evoke H3 review: Design and build

Often, when we review a Pure radio, style is one of the first things we notice.

The Evoke H3 has a very similar appeal to many of the other items in the Evoke series. It looks a bit like the slimmer version of the C-D4, with its authentic wood finish and bold white faceplate.

The wooden casing allows for a much deeper quality of sound, although we missed the tactile tuning knobs present on other Evoke models.

The thing that really makes the Pure Evoke H3 stand out when compared to alternatives like the H2 is the full-colour digital screen. The vivid screen presents radio station artwork in full colour.

What’s more, the practical user interface and large scrolling wheel make it much easier for listeners to use their radio – even if they’re new to DAB technology.

We particularly liked the fact that you can see all the art from your albums on the Pure Evoke H3 screen when streaming via Bluetooth.

For those who prefer to listen to their favourite channels privately, the Pure Evoke H2 DAB/DAB+/FM and Bluetooth radio comes with a headphone output.

Additionally, there’s the option to upgrade your Pure Evoke with a ChargePAK. The ChargePAK is the optional battery-pack solution from Pure that turns any radio into a portable device.

The compact design of the Pure Evoke H3 would make it an ideal option for those in search of portability – although there’s no carry handle included.

Pure Evoke H3 review: Features

The Pure Evoke H3 is all about giving consumers the perfect combination of sound quality, easy-to-use features, and sensational style.

We found the practical user interface very intuitive, which is nice if you’re looking for a radio that’s going to be suitable for a range of users.

Additionally, the Evoke H3 has clearly been created to suit a range of needs too.

With the large central scroll wheel at the top of the device, you can easily skip through DAB digital radio stations, finding a wider selection of content than you would with a standard FM device.

The digital connection will automatically find all available stations in your area. What’s more, the Evoke H3 is digital-tick approved for future performance, too.

If you can’t find any programs that you want to listen to via the radio signals, then you can use Bluetooth connectivity instead. The Evoke H3 will work as a wireless speaker with your tablet, smartphone, or laptop, showing your album artwork on the colour display as it plays.

Features include:

  • DAB, DAB+ and FM radio
  • Colour screen with plenty of information
  • Rechargeable battery option with ChargePAK
  • Compact design
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Up to 40 DAB/FM preset options
  • Multiple alarms
  • Aux-in
  • Sleep timer
  • Headphones out
  • Kitchen timer

One useful thing about the Pure Evoke H3 is that it comes with multiple alarm options, a sleep timer, and a kitchen timer. That means that you can just as easily use it in your bedroom, like the Pure Siesta Rise, or in your kitchen.

The presence of an FM tuner is a crucial yet overlooked factor by many people looking to buy a radio in this digital era. However, it’s worth noting that not all radio stations have transitioned digitally. Therefore, you can only listen to these stations through an analogue tuner.

Since the Pure Evoke H3 has an FM tuner, you can rest assured that you will not miss any of your favourite analogue FM radio stations.

We couldn’t quite figure out how to dim the display on the H3, though, which might be problematic for your bedroom.

Pure Evoke H3 review: Performance

So, how well does the Pure Evoke H3 perform overall?

We compared our own research to other Pure Evoke H3 reviews to get a more comprehensive answer to that question.

One very positive thing about this device is how easy it is to use.

The screen is intuitive and packed full of information, and the sensitive scroll wheel on the top of the device makes it easy to browse through stations and content.

It’s also nice to know that you can transform your Pure Evoke DAB radio into a portable device if you want to. However, consumers might lament the fact that they have to spend yet another £30 on an already expensive product to get some portability.

In terms of sound quality, Pure always seems to deliver above-average quality and deep tones. This is particularly evident in the Evoke series, which is enhanced by the wooden casing on each product.

However, it’s worth noting that this rather compact device is a little small when it comes to volume, too. If you’re looking for something that will get your furniture vibrating – then this isn’t it. The Pure Evoke H3 can get loud enough – but it’s limited in volume.

Although you won’t be able to turn the sound up loud enough to disturb your neighbours with the Evoke H3, you can rest assured that even if you turn the device up to the max, you won’t experience much by way of distortion.

Pure Evoke H3 Review: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Compact, attractive design
  • An easy-to-use Bluetooth
  • A 3-year manufacturer’s warranty
  • Excellent audio output quality

Cons

  • Slightly expensive than similar-sized products

Pure Evoke H3 review: Verdict

The sound quality, style, and general performance of the Pure Evoke H3 make it a great buy for those needing a reliable DAB radio. This forward-thinking device is compact, easy to use, and brimming with functionality that just makes it a delight to use.

However, there are some downsides, too. The fact that you need to pay more for the ChargePAK is a real thorn in the side for many customers who have already spent £100 on the Evoke H3.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the device is more of a kitchen radio or bedside alarm clock than a full speaker system. You’re not going to get bone-shattering sound with this radio set – but that might not be what you want to use it for.
