1. Denon CEOL-N10 Hi-Fi (best with Alexa)
The best bookshelf stereo system today is a world away from the simple devices we used to have only a few decades ago. Modern devices now feature everything from Bluetooth connectivity to smart assistant controls and more.
This Denon CEOL-N10 stereo is a compact, yet powerful device.
Blending a sophisticated appearance with a miniature footprint, the Denon won’t take up all the room in your home, but it will give you more control over your music.
There are 2 two-way speakers included, with their own soft dome tweeters and woofers.
Plus, you get access to Airplay and Alexa compatibility. Streaming your music couldn’t be easier with this device.
All that and you still get your AM/FM tuner, headphone jack, and a convenient built-in CD player too.
High-quality CD player
Music streaming with Amazon Alexa
Incredible dual speakers with woofers and tweeters
Powerful audio control features
Although the Denon isn’t the cheapest bookshelf stereo we’ve seen, it is one of the most intelligent, offering excellent modern performance for those who love tech.
If you’re searching for a tool that combines 100 years of experience developing audio quality, with state-of-the-art functionality, this is it.
The only downside, besides the price, is that it can be quite difficult to set this system up. But, it’s worth it when you have.
Incredible sound quality
Compact footprint – the perfect mini bookshelf stereo
As we mentioned above, the best bookshelf radios come in a wide variety of styles and shapes.
This particular product from Toshiba takes a vintage all-in-one approach to audio perfection.
The speakers come built into the main unit, so you can slide the whole device easily into any bookshelf, without worrying about extra space.
There’s also Bluetooth streaming available so you can play your own music if you can’t find anything to listen to on the radio.
This bookshelf stereo with wooden surround comes with an aux input and USB port for playing your MP3s, and an FM radio connection, although there’s no support for AM. You can also save up to 30 stations to your presets so that finding them is quicker and easier.
All that, and you get to control your device from a distance with remote control.
While many of the bookshelf stereo reviews we’ve conducted so far look at smaller devices, the Yamaha MCR-B020BL is our favorite mini and mighty product.
This compact stereo comes with a CD player, and AM/FM radio, for all your listening needs. You can also connect other devices via an aux cable or use Bluetooth to stream your music from digital devices.
The compact style of this stereo means that it’s great for slotting into a small space or cabinet. There are even detachable speakers, so you can arrange your system to suit you.
We also loved how convenient this product felt to use. The buttons and knobs are tactile and simple – ideal for almost any user.
The Yamaha features all the functionality you would expect for one of the best bookshelf speakers.
There’s a remote control so you can manage your music from a distance, and a bass boost option too. Plus, you can charge your smartphone and other devices from the speakers, thanks to the available USB input.
Unfortunately, you can’t change the CDs you’re playing without turning the full system off, which is a strange glitch.
Offering a great quality of sound for such a small device, the bookshelf stereo systems from Philips tick a lot of boxes for us.
Not only is this product reliable, but it’s easy to use too – regardless of what you might want to listen to.
The biggest issue that we had with this stereo is that the wires were really too short to connect it to a wall. Unless you can position your speaker right next to an outlet, you’re going to have a problem.
For most people, the best bookshelf stereo will come down to a consideration of two things: price and design.
On the one hand, you want a system that’s going to be small enough to fit into your bookshelf without any hassle.
These kinds of stereos are often intended to be compact and convenient. Depending on the size of your bookshelf, you might have a little more space to work with.
As well as finding something that’s compact, you also want a device that suits your tastes aesthetically and delivers a lot of great features.
That could mean choosing something diverse, like the Boytone with its vinyl player option.
On the other hand, you might want to focus on things like Bluetooth and NFC connectivity, like you can get from the Sony Micro.
Here are some of the points worth considering when you check out our bookshelf stereo reviews:
Size: How small does your bookshelf stereo really need to be? The Boytone will really only work for people who have a lot of space in their living room. If you’re limited on room, you could always go for the Yamaha MCR-B020BL. We love this device for its compact shape, and range of amazing features, like AM/FM radio, remote control performance, and Bluetooth streaming.
Features: What kind of modern features do you want with your stereo? If you’re just looking for something basic, like Bluetooth, you can find that with a lot of devices today. We particularly like the Phillips FX10 for Bluetooth performance. On the other hand, for something more advanced, try the Denon CEOL-N10. This product comes with Alexa built-in so you can manage your music with voice control.
Design: How do you want your stereo to look? Some all-in-one systems, like the Bose Wave, offer a fantastic modern aesthetic that will fit into any newer home. On the other hand, if you like the idea of a more vintage experience, you can’t go wrong with the Toshiba TY-CWU700. Just looking at this product makes us feel nostalgic.
Sound Quality: Speaking of the Bose Wave, it’s one of the top options that we’ve seen for amazing sound quality in the bookshelf stereo market. There are a lot of products out there that can offer a similar experience, if you’re willing to pay for it. The Denon D-M41 is excellent for filling a room with clear sound with absolutely no distortion.
Versatility: Finally, aside from FM/AM radio, what do you want your stereo to be able to play? There are options on the market for everything from cassette tapes to CDs and even vinyl records. If your chosen device is Bluetooth enabled, you can also play your own music with the tap of a button.
Picking the best bookshelf stereo
Bookshelf stereos come in a wide selection of shapes and sizes designed to suit every taste.
The product that’s right for you will depend on what you need from your new sound machine. If, for instance, you’re looking for genuine room-filling sound, then you’ll love the incredible quality of the Denon D-M41. It isn’t the cheapest option, though.
If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, and you want a device that’s compact, we’d recommend the Yamaha MCR-B020BL. We love this streamline bookshelf stereo for its unique appearance, and its excellent sound quality.
