Can You Listen to the Weather On Your Phone? (App For That)
Site Owner & Radio Enthusiast
We’ve all been there—stuck in unexpected rain, unprepared for a sudden cold snap that would have otherwise been prevented if you could listen to the weather on your phone.
Fortunately, you can through the NOAA Weather Radio app, one of my favorites.
I’ll discuss how the app works so you can use it effectively. I’ll also discuss other free weather apps to get weather updates on your phone when you need them most.
1. The NOAA Weather Radio App
Developed by Christopher Coudriet, the NOAA Weather Radio App is the best option to listen to live weather updates on your phone.
This premium app has a network of over 200 nationwide radio stations that broadcast continuous weather information to keep you updated.
I found this app to be the best overall because it allows you to choose a preferred survival radio you want to listen to.
The only drawback to using this app is that it has a two-to-three-minute delay from the actual emergency radio broadcasts.
On that note, you should own a dedicated NOAA weather radio receiver for the most up-to-date updates.
You can download the app on Android and iOS.
2. NOAA Weather Radar Live
Deemed as the world’s most accurate weather forecasting app, the NOAA Weather Radar app is one of the best options you can use to prepare for storms.
The app’s high accuracy is based on the fact that it’s owned by the Clime Weather Service LLC. This is a local worldwide weather forecaster that provides up-to-the-minute live weather updates.
It gets data from NOAA satellites and other local sources for the most accurate forecasts.
The best part is that, with this app installed on your phone, you can track weather patterns through interactive satellite maps to know how to navigate.
Moreover, you can check local forecasts to make informed decisions for your travel and daily lifestyle.
For example, if you like to go camping in the woods like I do, you can check local forecasts to determine if it’s safe.
The app’s best features include:
● Live updates for the latest forecasts
● Storm tracker
● Severe weather warnings
● Radar updates and hourly rain tracker
● Weather widgets
● Storm Radar news
There is a free and premium version of the app for Android and iOS. You’ll only get the basic weather forecasting features with the free version.
I like the premium version of the app because it gives you access to hurricane tracking, temperature maps, wildfire, and lightning coverage.
It also provides satellite weather maps demonstrating temperature, precipitation, and other crucial weather details.
3. MyRadar Weather Radar
With over 50 million downloads, MyRadar Weather Radar has proven to be among the most accurate and powerful apps. I use it all the time.
As a high-tech and high-definition weather radar app, MyRadar offers interactive weather maps to help you make more informed decisions based on your locality’s weather.
Besides its high-definition radar, this app avails of NOAA weather alerts, forecasts, and temperatures.
What’s more, if you’re in a hurricane-prone region, the app’s hurricane tracker allows you to track the storm’s path and take necessary safety precautions.
If you’re like me, you always want to know how much precipitation to expect before leaving the house. This app comes in handy with its patented precipitation models.
The models will inform you, hour-by-hour, how much rain to expect.
As if that’s not enough, the app presents disaster warnings, helping you to stay in the know about global disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes.
MyRadar Weather Radar app is available for Android and iOS.
4. WeatherBug
WeatherBug is another popular app you can use to get weather updates on your phone. It provides real-time forecasts and severe weather alerts.
Weatherbug will keep you up-to-date with current, hourly, and up to 10-day weather forecasts.
It will be your go-to option if you want to monitor a developing weather situation on the go.
After using this app for some time, I realized that, unlike other apps, it has an improved hurricane tracker with real-time hurricane forecasts. These forecasts will help you stay safe when traveling to hurricane-prone areas.
WetherBug comes in handy, especially if you’re a North American resident like I am.
The free version of the app provides Doppler radar in North America.
Other key features that make this app worth your time include:
● It uses GPS data to provide spark lightning alerts
● Air quality information
● Pollen count data
This app guarantees localized, real-time weather alerts by combining data from tracking stations, satellites, and weather services.
You can opt for a premium version for only 99 cents. It’s free of ads and has more weather features than its free counterpart.
Download WeatherBug for Android and iOS.
5. Windy
Imagine watching the clouds moving around or seeing the temperature and wind velocity in real-time on your phone. That’s what Windy offers you.
This app is a must-have if you’re an outdoor enthusiast because it provides live weather maps with high accuracy.
Windy provides an animated, interactive map to track hurricanes, cyclones, and other weather events worldwide. This way, you can prepare in advance for anything coming your way.
Although the app excels at wind patterns, it has over 40 maps that show variations in humidity, temperature, and other crucial weather data.
While you can access impressive weather features from the app’s free version, its $18.99 annual subscription version comes with tons of additional features. You’ll have the advantage of more frequent weather forecast updates.
You can download Windy for Android and iOS.
6. 1Weather
1Weather has all the features you’d expect in a weather app.
From live radar maps and severe weather warnings to a 10-day forecast, 1Weather has you covered.
The most remarkable feature of this app that amazed me especially is its minute-by-minute and hourly forecasts for precipitation and temperature. Since these forecasts extend up to 48 hours, you can use the app to plan ahead.
Additionally, since the app takes advantage of widgets, you can monitor the current temperature and other weather data without opening the app.
All the information is accessible from the phone’s home screen.
Some notable app features include:
● 24×7 local and national weather updates
● NWS and WDT alerts based on custom locations
● Radar maps for hazardous weather conditions
1Weather is available for free on Android and iOS.
You can also opt for the premium version for a $1.99 monthly subscription for more features and an app free of ads.
7. Yahoo Weather
Yahoo Weather is the final weather app I’ll feature on this list. This app stands out from the rest by displaying your location’s images with matching weather conditions and time of the day.
With this app, you can view a five-day detailed weather forecast and satellite and heat maps.
Unlike the other apps on this list, Yahoo Weather is highly user-friendly thanks to its concise and clean presentation.
The app is available on Android and iOS.
Wrapping Up
Today’s weather apps let you listen to forecasts on your phone easily, accessing real-time forecasts and severe weather alerts that come in handy while planning outdoor activities.
